Celebrating Independence Day in SMA is a big deal. According to history, Allende entered SMA and went to Narcisco de la Canal’s home to ask him to hand over the city to the insurgents. De la Canal refused to open the door the first time so Allende went to former city hall building and demanded the Spanish hand over the village. Allende went back to Canal’s home. Allende convinced de la Canal to go back to the city hall building (Consistorial House) with him and demand that the town be given over to them. The insurgents entered SMA and the Spanish agreed to give city hall to Allende, de la Canal and the insurgents. On September 17, 1810, the first city council was formed in SMA.
Bill and I took Juliet into to town today and found El Jardin filled with school children in uniform, marching bands and politicians.
